Pri 3

Pri 4
Yenn + Hasif + Mn

Pri 5 (upper primary)
Nadz + Wei Song

Things to note:
1. BE PREPARED! A good teacher does not go into class not knowing what he/she is going to do.

A) Meet up and discuss with your group/partner to prepare Lesson Plans for at least 4 lessons (about 2-3hrs each). Remember that we'd also be teaching at the city school. :) Bring your lessons plans to Yunnan!

B) Each lesson is to be thematic. (eg. 1 lesson can be on "body parts". So, plan all activities to be based on the topic of "body parts". Design one or two game/activity to play with the class, create a simple action song, do coloring, read a story book to the class, get the students to read each line of the story, get students to role-play characters in the story book, lead a discussion about the story, have a simple competition or quiz, etc.) Be as creative as you can. You can surf the web for interesting teaching activities that can be modified for your needs. If you need help or ideas, do approach me or Michelle for help.

C) Prepare your own teaching materials. DO NOT assume that they have everything there. (eg, worksheets, picture charts, picture cards, color pencils, story books, game logistics, etc)

D) It'd be good for each team to bring an english-chinese dictionary. For those who are chinese-speaking, please do not malu urself in front of the kids by not knowing what the chinese word is for the english word you're teaching.

2. BE FLEXIBLE! a good teacher must be ready to make changes to adapt to the needs of the class.

A) You may need to modify your lessons to the needs of the class, as well as to the duration of the class. Also, be sensitive to the body language of the children. For example, if they look bored, its time for an activity or song! :)

B) don't be upset if you may have to scrap certain activities which you have planned. Sometimes more doesn't = effective.

3. BE ENCOURAGING AND USE POSITIVE WORDS ALL THE TIME. a good teacher does not put down his/her students, but always look out for areas to commend and praise them.

A) It is good to prepare little rewards (sweets or stickers or pencils would be good). DO NOT give them anything expensive or extravagant. AND DO NOT GIVE THEM MONEY!!!!! Because we do not want to "spoil the market" for future volunteers, or their own teachers. (eg. You may want to buy colored M&Ms and put them into a big bottle, and reward them with 1 each for correct answers)

okie. enjoy preparing! have fun being 老师 (= teachers)!

Pre-trip Community Service (29 Feb 2008)

On 29th Feb, the YEP team went for their pre-trip community service at Metta Student Care. They were given an opportunity to put their skills in interacting with little kids to the test. Coming up with a few games on the spot, the team was able to conduct a few indoor games for the lovable children and brought smiles to their faces throughout the activities.

I hope you guys have learnt some lessons through this process as well, and strive to do even better when we're in Yunnan!
